MW4 Prestige Guide: Classic vs Regular, Camos & Rewards

Modern Warfare 4 has two Prestige routes, a separate 70-level DMZ track and a Weapon Prestige system that ends at Master Level 250. Activision confirmed the full structure on 19 October, giving players a clear view of what carries over, what resets and which rewards are attached to the longest grinds.

The headline change is choice. Every time you finish Level 55, MW4 lets you enter either Classic Prestige or Regular Prestige. Both continue the same ten-Prestige reward journey, but only Classic resets your level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress. Here is the confirmed system and what it means before launch.

MW4 Prestige at a glance

Track What resets? Main benefit
Regular Prestige Your rank returns to Level 1, but level unlocks and Create-a-Class content remain available. The easier route for players who want uninterrupted access to their loadout.
Classic Prestige Level unlocks and Create-a-Class progression reset. A 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetic rewards.

You make the choice again at the start of every Prestige, so selecting Classic once does not lock the whole account into Classic forever. The majority of rewards are shared across both routes; Classic adds premium-looking variants and the extra progression benefits above.

Player levels, DMZ levels and Warzone integration

Standard Multiplayer progression runs from Level 1 to Level 55. XP comes from matches, eliminations, objective play and challenges, with new weapons, equipment, perks, Field Upgrades and Killstreaks opening along the way. MW4 rewards at least one unlock at every level.

DMZ uses a separate Level 1–70 track. Story Missions, Dynamic Operations, Side Ops and other DMZ activities earn DMZ XP, unlocking Forward Operating Base stations, station upgrades, 3D Printer recipes, Operator skins, consumables, Survival Kits, Fire Support and gear. DMZ XP also contributes to the overall 1–55 Player Level, but Multiplayer and Warzone XP do not advance the separate DMZ level.

How Classic Prestige Permanent Unlock Tokens work

Classic Prestige gives one Permanent Unlock Token each time it is selected. The token permanently protects a single Level Unlock item from future Classic resets. Activision’s example is the Throwing Knife, normally unlocked at Level 48: spending a token on it keeps the item available through later Classic Prestige cycles.

The smartest early uses will depend on your preferred class, but high-level weapons, perks or equipment used in several loadouts offer the best practical value. Regular Prestige players do not need these tokens because their level unlocks remain intact.

Prestige rewards from 1 to 10

Each Prestige celebrates a different Call of Duty era and awards a notable blueprint or Operator skin. Prestige 1 begins with the Sandstorm skin and ends with a Mosin-Nagant blueprint. Later highlights include PPSh-41, Finn LMG, Axion, M4 and Sang 9mm blueprints, plus SAS, Army SF Airborne and Reece skins.

Classic players receive “Prime” or otherwise enhanced variants of the final reward. At Prestige 8, for example, Regular earns the 141 M4 blueprint while Classic earns 141 Prime. Prestige 10 finishes with the Boksu or Boksu Prime Sang 9mm blueprint.

Prestige Master and Prestige Legend

After all ten Prestiges, the level cap expands to 1,000 Prestige Master levels. Rewards arrive every five to ten levels until Level 99, then every 25 levels. Early unlocks include the Paragon Park Operator skin, Pinnacle weapon charm and Master Renegade HAN 86 blueprint. Level colours begin at 56, while sets of legacy Prestige icons start at Level 100 and continue every 100 levels. Activision has kept the Level 1,000 Prestige Legend reward classified.

MW4 camo progression is shared across modes

Every weapon starts with eight Military Camos tied to Weapon Level, followed by three weapon-specific Special Camos. Once unlocked, Special Camos enter a universal pool and can be equipped on other weapons. Challenge requirements adjust by mode, but completion carries across Multiplayer and DMZ, with Warzone joining in Season 1.

Completionist progression moves through Gold, Platinum, Harmonic Break and Divergence. Beyond that, each mode has its own mastery set. The important launch-day advantage is that digital pre-order players can begin earning Weapon XP, attachments and camos in DMZ Early Access from 20 October, and those unlocks will be available in Multiplayer when MW4 launches on 23 October.

Weapon Prestige and all four Pyroclast milestones

After a weapon reaches its maximum level, Weapon Prestige becomes optional. Entering it resets that weapon to Level 1 and relocks most attachments, but Apex Attachments and blueprint attachments remain available. Shared attachments unlocked on other weapons are not relocked, and cosmetic customisation—including camos, reticles, accessories, decals and stickers—stays intact.

  • Pyroclast: Weapon Prestige 1, Level 1
  • Pyroclast Terminus: Weapon Prestige 1, maximum level
  • Pyroclast Scatter: Weapon Prestige Master Level 150
  • Pyroclast Cascade: Weapon Prestige Master Level 250

Once Weapon Prestige 1 is completed, Master progression begins automatically without another reset. Reticle progress is also shared across modes for each optic, making DMZ a useful place to build weapon and sight progress before Season 1.

Which Prestige route should you choose?

Choose Regular if you want to preserve your loadouts, compete immediately with familiar gear or minimise re-unlocking. Choose Classic if the reset is part of the appeal and you value the 20% XP boost, Permanent Unlock Token and exclusive reward variants. Because the choice returns every Prestige, a mixed strategy is possible: Regular for a busy launch period, then Classic when you are ready for a deeper grind.
